Will AI Jeopardize Creativity?
This title was inspired by a virtual event I attended earlier this week. It's called Gatherverse, and it advocates a humanity first approach to the Metaverse and other emerging technologies. There is genuine concern about machines taking people's jobs. What should your reaction be? I've seen artists make protests against artificial intelligence, but do you think they'll be effective in preventing its development? 'Fashion show for the seniors' is the tag used by a Nigerian creative's generative AI image. Before it was revealed that they were all artificial intelligence (AI) created, I initially believed that this post was about a real event because the picture was so convincing. Paintings and charcoal drawings used to be the focal point of celebration before artificial intelligence (AI) was even a thing, with people praising the artist for his or her brilliance. Interestingly, generative AI is now center stage for a similar celebration :)
According to Grand View Research; the global generative AI market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 34.6% from 2022 to 2030 to reach USD 109.37 billion by 2030. In one of the design groups I'm a part of, I mentioned that, in order to avoid getting caught in the "innovators dilemma's web," "adaptability" is the key word right now. Let's instead use AI as a tool rather than trying to go against it and using our creative genius to position our services, using the technology as an advantage instead. The images I used in this newsletter and previous ones were created using "stable diffusion." I use "quillbot" to paraphrase, and ChatGPT also helps me generate insights.
“This is not a race against the machines. If we race against them, we lose. This is a race with the machines. You’ll be paid in the future based on how well you work with robots. Ninety percent of your coworkers will be unseen machines.”
This is what, Kevin Kelly, said in 'The Inevitable,' published in 2016. Those words seem spot-on right now!
Although AI excels at exact tasks requiring accuracy and precision, it is not very good at being creative. The two ideas are in fact diametrically opposed. AI was created to be exact, follow directions, and accomplish predetermined objectives. Because of this, AI struggles to be creative. The major issue with artificial intelligence is that it is primarily concerned with completing the tasks you give it. It can't deviate from its instructions or think of creative solutions to issues, thus this means it's not very good at doing either.
Finding novel answers to issues that others might not have thought of is what creativity is all about. Since AI is trained to do only one thing at a time—achieve its objectives—it cannot consider an issue from a variety of angles or come up with unanticipated answers. As a result, AI won't be able to think creatively and will be driven to produce the precise outcomes you specify. Since this is creativity's antithesis, the two conceptions of AI and creativity are fundamentally dissimilar.
Like all technologies, AI has advantages and disadvantages. Depending on the nature of your business, you could wish to integrate AI into the creative process. AI software can assist with repetitive jobs involving analysis, data processing, and information collection. (Devan Leos)
A creative process is frequently complicated and untidy, and it necessitates constant communication between many departments. Certain tasks can be automated by AI, improving the effectiveness and efficiency of the creative process. For instance, AI can search the internet for pictures and information to aid in brainstorming.
I asked ChatGPT; will AI jeopardize creativity?
ChatGPT:
No, AI is unlikely to jeopardize creativity. While AI can automate certain tasks and generate creative outputs, it does not have the ability to understand or replicate human intuition, emotions, and original ideas. Instead, AI can be seen as a tool that can enhance and augment human creativity by providing new perspectives, inspiration, and capabilities. Ultimately, the role of AI in creativity will depend on how it is used and the goals of the creators involved.
That's all for today, enjoy your weekend.
Cheers,
'Seun.
